I was a total dummy when it came to investing. I wanted a book to teach me the basics of investing. This book more than met my needs. It only took a couple of hours to read, but it covered the basics of mutual funds, index funds, and asset allocation. The book was very easy to read and was not filled with terminology I did not understand. After reading the book, I am ready to start investing in index funds, and I have already started to learn more about asset allocation. A must read book for people new to mutual fund investing!

Charming” is not a word associated with books about investing, but that was my reaction to Mr. Eade’s book, in which he lays out in clear language 1)who he is, 2)who his mentors have been, 3)what he has learned about investing, and 4)practical steps to take. He also lists specific books and websites. Nothing wishy-washy about this material!

I particularly like the practical advice given to young investors that they create a table noting how many shares they have purchased each month. This should make it much easier to stick to dollar-cost-averaging when decreases in share prices make it look as if one is losing ground. The number of shares purchased each month will, of course, go up.

There is a deep discount broker that appears to fit the bill for using ETF’s by the small investor. The broker is MBTRADING. They received an overall highest rating by Barrons magazine. Commissions are one cent per share up to 500 shares and one-half cent thereafter with a $1.00 minimum commission per transaction. Cost to open an account deposit $2,000. Phone orders at no additional cost.

This book is a gem and I rate it among the top 25 books written for its coverage of modern investing strategies. The author makes many startling statements backed by reference to the authors and books listed in the appendix. For the novice investor Gordon gives you specific instructions on how to structure your portfolio and how to measure your progress toward your objective.

Other books tell you why you should use passive investing strategies, Gordon’s book show you how to implement your selected retirement plan. Think of this book as a cookbook for the investor. The model portfolios are the recipes, what index funds to buy. The instructions are where to buy your funds. And most important how to evaluate your progress toward your objective.

For the past thirty years it has been known that there is an investing strategy that is superior in all respects to other systems to invest in the stock market. The strategy has passed peer reviews in leading technical journals, and empirical evidence has been collected and analyzed verifying the technique. One may ask why is it that I have not heard of the system. Well, Wall Street and it supported industries, the print media and television has yet to figure out how to make any money from the system.

The strategy uses index mutual funds and exchange traded funds in a manner consistent with the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory. Approximately 17% of individual investors and 30% of our pension plans and large trusts use the technique exclusively. Much of the information supporting the method can be found in expensive technical journals written using advanced mathematics not comprehensible to even highly educated students. The author has reduced these data to a set of simple instructions for the average investor to follow.

This book provides the average investor all of the information needed to understand and apply the strategy. It supplies the reader with model portfolios, the names and addresses of super low cost on-line brokers and techniques to build and maintain a portfolio to comply with the system.

Think of the book as a cookbook for the investor that supplies a recipe for following the method just as a cookbook recipe supplies the baker with the ingredients and quantities required to bake a cake. The baker just needs this information for success; he does not need to be a food chemist.

I highly recommend this book.
