If you have even the most basic knowledge of the film business, you will find nothing new or interesting in this book. Tanya shares nothing that hasen’t been said 50 times before, in fact, she does not even mention the fact that her company went bankrupt–OK, not officially, in California they have a State thing called Assignment to Creditors, but it’s the same thing. The bankruptcy story would have been interesting. There are so many good books out there, unless you have a bird cage at home, you don’t really need this one.

Note — this book is about “making movies,” but you should know that my review is from a screenwriter’s perspective. If you want to write, make, or produce big budget, big studio, Hollywood movies, this book isn’t for you. It’s about writing and/or producing low-budget indie movies, and it’s written by somebody who knows how to do it. What’s your best shot at writing a low-budget movie that will actually make money? She tells you. You can find all kinds of “screenwriting” books out there with tons of stuff about character arcs, theme, plot points, big events, how to attract A-list actors who want to win an Oscar, how to pitch top studio and agency executives. If that’s for you, fine. But if you don’t live in L.A., if you aren’t trying to write the next box office smash, if you just want to write a nice little low-budget flick with a shot at getting produced and making a few bucks, then buy and read this book. The chapter on genres alone is worth the price of admission. Other reviewers called Tanya York “brutal” in her honesty — she is, and that’s what you need. She lays out in blunt terms what it’s taken me a dozen scripts (with one optioned and one actually produced) to learn by trial and error.

I have known Tanya for years, and the book sounds exactly like she speaks and acts regarding the Movie Business.

Her track record ,therefore, speaks for itself regarding whether or not her concept of Making Money in the Movei Business is valid or not.

Tanya is a winner, and knows what she speaketh about!!

I recommend that anybody thinking about getting in the business, (or anybody that got in and failed), read this book. It is filled with very worthwhile thought patterns and decision making information.

Good work, baby!!

I recommend this book. I found the book to be motiving and educational. It cuts to the heart of giving insight to filmmakers who want to make films for a living. None of the fluff, stuff. Just hardcore facts, to jump start your career as a filmmaker.

With Mario Van Peebles giving the forward, I think, right there, its worth the price of admission.
