I would have loved to have viewed Traffic, Live at Santa Monica, but unfortunately, I opened the Traffic DVD case only to find that someone had substituted some absolutely awful Hair band by the name of Cinderella. This is the second time this has happened in the past 12 months. I have only had this trouble with Amazon music DVD’s. Both times were Amazon direct purchases. This is the second strike. Good luck. I still have high hopes of seeing Traffic, 1972 vintage.

It was my good fortune to have seen Traffic at Winterland in S.F.in the same year (‘72). As then , Winwood was not very exciting to watch as a performer but the music speaks for itself. (Its too bad that Jim Capaldi doesn’t take the drum set & relies on singing & percussion.) Jim Gordon was the often used drummer, but to this day his story is a sad one. Look up his story on Google….and hopefully he’ll come home someday. The concert itself is just great: editing, performance, use of camera, and sound are all top notch compared to today’s cutting, switching & manuevers which distract from the performance. Taylor Hackford could be credited for the scope & Wally Heider for the sound. (A wonderful work by Hackford is “Black Robe”). This is a recording to be returned to time & again, for Chris Wood, Winwood, and Capaldi are some of the most talented artists of this or any other time in the span of rock’n rolla.

Traffic were my favorite band in high school, and this concert was filmed the year I graduated. I had seen this same lineup later in the year in Boston when I attended freshman year of college and I was very impressed with the musicianship. This is a great concert for several reasons. The rhythm section of bass/drums is the Muscle Shoals guys who recorded with Aretha Franklin and they are rock solid. Chris Wood, who always appears to be very high, has a beautiful, original musical feel, as does the whole band. They treat the music gently but with big energy too. But the star, of course, and certainly not due to charisma, because he has none, is Winwood. The guy is the complete musician. His guitar playing on “John Barleycorn” is studio-perfect; it’s hard to believe he plays and sings live so well. His much-underrated guitar playing is great too; he plays with a thumbpick, something I never knew. What a great band, RIP Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi.

growing up in chicago in the 60’s and 70’s, i was fortunate to see and experience many great bands of the era for cheap/the first time i saw traffic, i had front row seats and it was magical/this dvd in santa monica is a realistic representation of this talented group of musicians of the early seventies/the close-ups of chris wood playing the flute and sax are very special to me/what is nice about a concert dvd, is that you can turn off the tv and listen like a cd/a nice addition to my i-pod classic/get it while you can//peace
